Shopping Options

The Plants Store section shows that a Prime member can shop by brand as its features top plant sellers on the Web; namely, Proven Winners, Shop Succulents, Brussel’s Bonsai, Delray Plants, Colorchids, Just Add Ice, Kurt Weiss Greenhouses Inc., and New Life.

A Prime member can also shop by plant or tree type – from bonsai and shrub plants to Italian and Leyland cypress trees – and by growing season (perennials and annuals).

The Plants Store section mentioned that perennials “return year after year, need the cold of winter for hibernation before they blossom in spring, and may go underground in the winter depending on the plant variety, growing back up again when the temperatures rise.

Annuals, on the other hand, “are meant to be seasonal, performing best from spring to fall and can keep growing all year in warmer zones.”

A plant buyer can filter the plant or tree choices by “Garden & Patio,” “Home,” and “Great Gifts” as well as sort them by price and rating.

Hardiness Zones

The Plants Store section also talks about hardiness zones. “Plants perform best when grown within their hardiness zones,” Amazon said.

A plant has to tolerate the coldest and hottest temperatures in a zone to return year after year. The absolute highest zone in the country is 13, and the coldest is 1.”

Amazon recommended that a plant buyer use the agriculture department’s hardiness zone portal to determine the hardiness zone.

The site has a 2012 USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map, which is used by gardeners and growers to find out which plants are most likely to thrive at a certain location.
